Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) is an independent industry-funded body supporting employers, workers, apprentices and career seekers in the building and construction industry.
If you are currently working in the Queensland building and construction industry or if you are an unemployed eligible worker, you may be eligible for CSQ funded training to advance or expand your skills under one of the CSQ programs listed below:
- Short course program
- Skills Assessment and Gap Training Program (General and Civil Construction)
- Higher Level Skills Program (General and Civil Construction)
- Apprentice Advance+ Program

- an eligible worker has the same meaning as the Building and Construction Industry (Portable Long Services Leave) Act 1991 (QLD).
Short course program
The Short Courses program provides funding to assist with upskilling and cross skilling existing and unemployed eligible workers in the building and construction industry. Short Courses are individual competencies and skills sets designed to provide flexible solutions to workers wanting to update their skills and knowledge in specific, targeted areas.
Eligibility for the Short Course General Construction program:
To be eligible for the Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Short Courses program, individuals:
- must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or hold a refugee and humanitarian visa
- must permanently reside in Queensland or be permanently employed in Queensland
- must be an eligible worker in the building and construction industry OR an Unemployed Eligible Worker who has been unemployed for a period of not greater than four (4) years
- must not be eligible under the Apprentice Advance Plus program as:
- a current active apprentice or trainee in Queensland as defined in the Act undertaking a Recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship; or
- an existing worker or unemployed eligible worker in the first year out of their Recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship who must commence training within 365 days of the completion date recorded by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training administration system (DELTA); or
- a cancelled apprentice or trainee who was undertaking a Recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship that has been cancelled and are currently accessing State Government funding to complete their institution-based training
- cannot be currently enrolled and participating in a Queensland secondary school program (excluding a school based Apprentice or Trainee)
- cannot be a contracted trainer or assessor or existing worker of a Registered Training Organisation
- cannot have previously completed the short course for which funding is sought
- cannot have been funded by an Authority for delivery of the same training being undertaken as a part of this program
- cannot be seeking a Verification of Competency or Determination of Competency services

If you work in the general construction workforce or the civil construction workforce, and have learnt skills on the job but don’t hold a formal qualification, the Skills Assessment and Gap Training (SAGT) program may be suited to you.
Eligibility for the Skills Assessment and Gap Training General and Civil programs:
- must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or hold a refugee and humanitarian visa
- must permanently reside in Queensland or be permanently employed in Queensland
- must be an existing and eligible worker in the building and construction industry or be an unemployed eligible worker and able to demonstrate RPL experience in 80% or more competencies required to complete the full qualification.
- cannot be an employee of any Authority (excludes employees of an Indigenous Council that is a Principal Contractor) [AHC and CPC qualifications only]
- cannot be currently enrolled and participating in a Queensland secondary school program
- cannot be currently undertaking an Apprenticeship or Traineeship
- cannot be a contracted trainer or assessor or existing worker of a Registered Training Organisation
- cannot have previously completed the units of competency for which funding is sought
- must seek to achieve more than 80% (but less than 100%) of the entire qualification by Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – and less than 50% through direct credit transfer
- cannot be previously funded under this program in the same contract term
- cannot be funded by an Authority or such other source for delivery of the same training being undertaken as part of this program

Higher Level Skills Program (General and Civil Construction)
The Higher Level Skills program provides nationally accredited qualifications including Certificate IV and Diploma and is targeted to assist participants in career development to help you gain new skills and knowledge.
Eligibility for the Higher Level Skills Program:
To be eligible for the Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Higher Level Skills program, individuals:
- must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or hold a refugee and humanitarian visa
- must permanently reside in Queensland or be permanently employed in Queensland
- must be an existing worker (includes relevant clerical, administration and professional staff) in the building and construction industry OR an Unemployed Eligible Worker who has been unemployed for a period of not greater than four (4) years
- can be an Apprentice in the 3rd or 4th year of the apprenticeship [BSB and CPC qualifications only]
- must not be eligible under the Apprentice Advance Plus program as:
- a current active apprentice or trainee in Queensland as defined in the Act undertaking a Recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship; or
- an existing worker or unemployed eligible worker in the first year out of their Recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship who must commence training within 365 days of the completion date recorded by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training administration system (DELTA); or

Apprentice Advance+ Program
The Apprentice Advance+ program offers additional training to eligible apprentices and trainees to boost their skills and career prospects.
Eligibility for the Apprentice Advance+ Short Course program:
To be eligible for the Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) Apprentice Advance+ Short Course program, individuals:
- must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or hold a refugee and humanitarian visa
- must permanently reside in Queensland or be permanently employed in Queensland
- must fit one of the following categories:
- a current or cancelled apprentice or trainee of a recognised apprenticeship or traineeship; or
- an employee or self-employed in the Queensland Building and Construction industry, commencing training within 365 days from completion date of their recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship
- a permanent Queensland resident unemployed for a period less than twelve (12) months in the first year out of a Recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship, , commencing training within 365 days from completion gapdate of their Recognised Apprenticeship or Traineeship
- cannot be an employee of any Authority (excludes employees of an Indigenous Council that is a Principal Contractor)
